Girls for Girls started because we saw firsthand what happens when young women in Central Asia have ambition but no access — no mentors, no networks, no one who'd been where they wanted to go.

Arina Turgunbekova gave me her recommendations and advice throughout the program. The program also supported participants through trainings on various topics, which were incredibly useful. The mentorship program taught me to set priorities, plan effectively, and inspired me to help others. I am sincerely grateful to my mentor and to the program for this experience.

With the support of her mentor Arina Turgunbekova, she was accepted into Yale Young Global Scholars — receiving 100% funding worth $6,500.

I was a mentee in the first cohort, and my mentor, Aikanysh eje, was one of the most inspiring and vibrant people I’ve ever met. Through this program, I grew far beyond my expectations. It taught me that both failures and achievements give life its color, and that setbacks simply mean you’re moving forward. I learned to set priorities, stay confident, write strong essays, succeed in interviews, and better understand my emotions. Most importantly, I learned to appreciate myself, be grateful, and enjoy life. As a result, I was accepted into TechGirls and Camp Rising Sun and won third place in a regional olympiad. I am deeply grateful to my mentor and the Girls for Girls mentorship program for helping me become the person I am today.

After graduating university, I wasn't sure whether I should continue pursuing fashion design. When I applied to the programme, I decided to give myself one last chance. Through the mentorship programme I was matched with my mentor, Aisuluu Turdubaeva, who runs her own atelier. She encouraged me to return to sewing and helped me rebuild my confidence. Shortly afterwards, I received my first large custom order.

Matched with fashion atelier owner Aisuluu Turdubaeva, Yryskeldi returned to her craft, developed new pieces, and landed her first significant income as a designer — all within the programme
